The Harbinger sat down with Jerick Togami, General Manager - FlippedApp, at Concept3D to discuss how the future of student matching will impact Admissions and Enrollment teams and college-bound students in the throws of the decision making process. Concept3D, already well known to hundreds of institutions for their immersive online experiences, has extended their success with engaging students online by introducing the FlippedApp, a tool supporting both students and admissions offices in their search to find their perfect match.

The Harbinger (TH): Jerick, tell us how and why you joined Concept3D to lead the launch of FlippedApp.

Jerick Togami (JT): I’ve worked primarily in the education technology space. Concept3D reminded me of my career roots, having started my first job in the Admissions Office of a university, stuffing envelopes and then serving as a student ambassador, which led to other roles for me within the institution. Concept3D intrigued me, and in particular the FlippedApp platform, which will redefine the way Admissions Offices engage with prospective students, and empower them to state, “we want you to enroll here because . . .”

TH: That sounds like a new level of targeting, recruiting and enrollment. How will FlippedApp enhance the way recruitment works?

JT: When it comes to matching the right student to their right-fit institution there are a lot of technologies and companies promising to support higher education to achieve their enrollment goals. FlippedApp is different in that we have a deeper level of understanding of our soon-to-be population of 50,000 high school US graduates. That information about our students allows us to pinpoint where they are in the decision-making process, which is key for admissions. This data, along with our developing AI algorithm, makes the targeting and recruitment process more efficient, allowing recruiters and admissions officers to spend their time and energy on truly qualified, interested and engaged students.

TH: Students that are interested and engaged have to be interacting with you in order for this to work - what benefits do students receive from leveraging FlippedApp?

JT: That’s absolutely right, and FlippedApp speaks to today’s well-informed students. Students want to share what they are looking for in an institution in order to make the best decision on where to apply and enroll. So many factors go into that decision making process, that relying on FlippedApp to help them get their names in front of the right schools and programs meant for them is super powerful. Students can rely on FlippedApp to introduce their profiles to recruiters who represent institutions where the student will meet the requirements and mesh with the ethos in order to not only achieve success but enjoy their college experience.

TH: The roles of the recruiter, the admissions officer, the enrollment leader, have been on a trajectory of change. Those changes have certainly been impacted, and perhaps accelerated, by the pandemic. The way institutional teams have to work in order to attract and enroll well-qualified students is ever evolving. What has been the response in the admissions and enrollment community to FlippedApp?

JT: Admittedly, some higher education leaders are hesitant to bring on a new tool that their staff needs to learn how to use and leverage in their roles. For this reason, we are developing AI tools to automate and save their teams time. Also, when we talk to these leaders and their teams, who tend to be already overwhelmed with the amount of work to be done, we find that many newer team members tend to have commercial sales and marketing backgrounds. Given this, they have been overwhelmingly receptive to considering a tool like FlippedApp, which can extend their success rate in the most efficient manner possible. FlippedApp helps teams understand student backgrounds better and earlier which results in more targeted, personalized recruitment efforts, faster deposits and higher yield.

TH: Jerick, it has been a delight to learn about you, Concept3D, and the FlippedApp tool. Where can our readers learn more about FlippedApp?

JT: We’ve partnered with Harbinger Lane Consulting to engage with admissions and enrollment leaders in a no-pressure conversation about Concept3D and the FlippedApp. We’d love to chat further about the future of targeting and matching, and other exciting developments for colleges and universities. Definitely reach out to HLC to share your interest and the challenges you and your team might be experiencing in finding and recruiting students that will thrive on your campus. My team and I will also be at the SLATE conference in June, so we’d be happy to meet up there too!

Could your admissions team benefit from a boost in targeting, matching, recruiting and yield?
